Dreams of Flowers and Wings
Marchesa Spring Summer 2015 & 2016
Photographer Nick Knight’s series of melting flowers inspired the Spring Summer 2015 collection. How do you capture something ephemeral and lucidly transforming in permanent materials? How do you capture a bird in flight or a flower shedding it’s petals?
Capturing the fluid :
Embroidery with Chinese raw silk plotted in a vertical grid achieves the dripping sensation of the photograph, and applied to a lace top.
Multi-coloured dyed feather flowers create bouquets as soft as the tulle gowns they adorn.
Botanical Menagerie in mirrors and thread:
Flora and fauna artwork reimagined in an intricate mosaic of beading and threadwork for the Spring Summer 2015 collection.
Beading techniques and colorways are established first through swatches with the Indian vendors. Artwork is realized on the patterns, drawn by hand and applied digitally. Here two styles use the same techniques in different colorways and artwork is modified to create two completely different looks.
Couture designs for the market:
Intricate raised threadwork with metallic threads, badla and jeweled beading seen on the left, was re-designed and re-interpreted to create a machine embroidered repeat fabric in China. This allowed for more price conscious pieces such as the cocktail seen above.
